It was fun. It made life interesting. It got people to notice them
(...)If you live a normal life of absolute futility, which we can assume most of this week’s rioters do, excitement of any kind is welcome. The people who wrecked swathes of property, burned vehicles and terrorised communities have no moral compass to make them susceptible to guilt or shame.
(...)The depressing truth is that at the bottom of our society is a layer of young people with no skills, education, values or aspirations. They do not have what most of us would call ‘lives’: they simply exist.
There are so many branches in this discussion now though...it's not only the gangster teens from poor illiterate backgrounds that started it..it's not only the professional thieves who joined afterwards, their causes and their motives, it's also the middle class that were stealing stupid things just to make their lives a little interesting. It's ALL PARTS OF SOCIETY. It's not anybody's fault, it's our society. It happens on a lesser scale, everyday. There are no manners, there are no shared aspirations, we have no respect for ourselves, let alone for each other.
